ABOUT THE SOLOISTS:
Samuel Shuhan began his bass studies at age twelve in the seventh grade with Katherine Walker. He attended the Interlochen Arts Camp for three summers where his teachers included Winston Budrow, Lawrence Hurst and Aaron Tenney, and subsequently spent his freshman year in high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he studied with Derek Weller. Since returning to Ithaca, he has been a student of Nicholas Walker, Professor of Bass at Ithaca College. He intends to major in music in college.
Marza Wilks, now 19 and a recent Ithaca High School graduate, first picked up the cello at the age of 5. For the last six years, she studied with John Haines-Eitzen. She has also studied with Christine Lowe-Diemecke, Elizabeth Simkin, Elinor Frey, Steve Doane, Rosemary Elliott, and Andre Emelianoff. Marza began attending the New England Conservatory in the fall of 2010 in pursuit of a Bachelor of Music degree in Cello Performance. She is in the studio of Natasha Brofsky. After being named first runner-up in 2008, Marza won the Hertzog Concerto Competition in 2009. She won the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music Youth Chamber Music Competition in 2009 with the Vesna Trio and again in 2010 with the Marannine Trio. She has performed in the Yellow Barn Young Artists Festival and is currently principal cellist of the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra.
She received an Honorable Mention in the 2009 Lee Strebel Memorial Competition, before being named co-winner in 2010.
